Extending the Northwell Health Brand in Digital
Northwell Health, New York State’s largest healthcare provider and private employer, needed a flexible yet consistent way to build and extend their new brand online.
However, with a growing network of 23 hospitals, about 600 outpatient facilities, and a number of digital teams, maintaining brand integrity across their digital ecosystem is a constant challenge and a top priority.
The objectives of the project were twofold; empower Northwell Health’s digital teams to create new content and devise a way to maintain brand integrity across the platform.
Paying particular attention to the online brand experience, Phase2 utilized a component based approach to craft a new design system that has become central to the Northwell Health digital ecosystem.
Making Consistent Brand a Reality
Creating consistent and accessible design and UX across large organizations presents a number of logistical complications. Northwell Health not only recognized the value of consistent design, but also realized the importance of investing in tools to make consistency achievable for their many teams and vendors.
Design Standards Initiative
In order to standardize Northwell Health’s digital presence, Phase2 worked with Northwell’s internal team to create a consolidated and consistent library of design elements and components. These designs were built out into a comprehensive digital style guide giving all of the Northwell Health digital content teams easy-to-use, standardized, and flexible brand elements. The style guide makes it simple for Northwell Health to maintain a consistent look and feel across all of their healthcare sites and services. This work is the basis for replatforming using Drupal 8, currently being built out.
In September 2017, Northwell Health began implementing the design standards initiative across their digital properties, starting with the Cohen Children’s Medical Center site on a new Drupal 8 platform that provides a great baseline for component-based design implementation.
Emphasizing Web Accessibility
Accessibility is crucial for Northwell Health as they prioritize serving as much of their audience as possible. As a result, accessibility was a key focus area of the user experience audit that was performed on Northwell Health’s website. Focusing on web accessibility increases potential audience reach and enhances overall user experience on Northwell Health’s digital platform, increasing patient loyalty and trust.
