New Year's resolutions can sometimes be a little tough, especially in an industry that moves so quickly you pretty much need to make resolutions for every month of the calendar year. Looking for some ideas? Here are some suggestions, including some of my own goals for the year.

Dive into the Experience Layer

Web design is broken down into three elements, content, style, and experience. The Experience layer is the aspect of a design that engages the user, whether it be through flash, Javascript or other interactive technologies, this aspect of design helps to transform the web to an interactive medium. Javascript is my technology of choice within the experience layer and for that I have chosen to brush up on JQuery for my new year's resolution. Javascript libraries can be intimidating but now more than ever there are lots of resources for designers to take the plunge. Check out some of these resources:

Get creative with CSS3

CSS3 is not currently supported by all browsers but you can use it to enhance your designs with just a few lines of code. If you wait until all browsers officially support it you will already be behind in how to think about its application. Start small with rounded corners (border-radius), box shadows or opacity and then work your way to using @font-face.

Read Blogs outside of Your Comfort Zone

Its easy to get stuck reading the same blogs that all share the same information. Venture out and choose a few outside of your normal comfort zone. Try some blogs that focus on mediums other than the web-design such as letterpress, interior design, or photography. There is so much you can learn from how other design industries operate that can help to refresh your design perspective and push your work to the next level. Some suggestions:

Attend more Art Shows

Art is a great way to freshen up your design perspective for the new year. Attending more art exhibits gets you away from the computer and out and about. if you live in DC there are tons of different options for seeing a good art show. Trends in the art world can also help influence the design world, so staying up to date will help you to be a better designer in the new year. Art suggestions in the DC area:
