Newspaper publishers have known for generations that a cartoon sketch added to a page with a bunch of text is a good idea.

With today's short attention spans, pictures are even more important. Sketches can be used in both website design and as web content. Here's what sketches can do:

Show a concept.

Who wants to read a paragraph when a picture will do? Plus in many instances, a drawing is the best way to show an idea.

Create a mood.

A whimsical illustration can make plain vanilla apps like Dropbox.com seem fun to use.

Create a brand.

Numerous brands revolve around cartoons. Hungry Girl is a good example. Using cartoon illustrations creates a vibe of fun, creativity and uniqueness and contrasts well with sometimes bland photos of food.

We've decided to use cartoon sketches in our own website. Check out the new illustrations on the Phase2 site homepage.
