Jeff:
On the first anniversary of the President's inauguration, I wanted to share some thoughts about the historic Open Government Initiative and discuss the implementation details of last month's Open Government Directive. Since we are developers, we wanted to do more than talk and write about what open government is, we are interested in how it actually looks and works to a user on the web. So we prepared some mock-ups for this purpose and shared it around town. This mock-up demonstrates both our concept for the user interface and content of a great /open site, but also prototypes what a simple approach to open government data and communications could be through a templated installation of Drupal we would like to build if some agency wants one?

Earlier this year we blogged about the launch of a new Open API, which Phase2 built for The World Bank. The Open API allows third-party developers and organizations to freely query World Bank's largest dataset containing world economic and business indicators and create all kinds of interesting mash-ups.
Today Google announced the addition of the API data to its search results.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of moderating a panel session at the Online News Association's 2009 Conference in San Francisco on the use of semantic web technologies for publishers entitled "Can the Semantic Web Really Save your Site?" Our 3 guests included two CTOs for major online news organizations and a semantic web author and technology expert. I was really looking forward to this and was not let down at the caliber of knowledge these guys brought to the table (literally).

In his latest podcast, Semantic expert and writer Paul Miller talks with Jeff Walpole, Frank Febbraro and Irakli Nadareishvili. They discuss our work with Drupal, semantic technologies and the recent trend to make Government data more usefully available via open source and semantic tools.

As we usher in this new era of open data and government transparency by making raw data available to the public in platform independent formats on Data.gov, we could be overlooking one of the simplest and most sincere opportunities to show what the open data movement is about: Linked Data. Linked data is the key to connecting government data sets to other government data and external data sources on the web.
I am hoping to create interest for a community-led project to prototype an RDF enabled dataset for Data.gov and link it to other related data sources in the Linked Data Cloud.

The Obama campaign was founded on hope and change. Our fearless leader promised a new level of openness, not only for major issues like healthcare and corporate financial reporting, but also in the daily operations of the government. Now that he’s been in office 5 months, it’s becoming very clear that such leaps toward transparency will demand a new level of open data, technologically advanced systems, and all at a reduced price

World Bank has been collecting massive amounts of data, for the past 50+ years, and now possesses one of the richest repository of information about economic development in the world. Phase2 Technology had the pleasure of helping World Bank architect and engineer a new major release of its Open API 2.0
As we steadily approach the next era online where open data and the semantic web gives us more than we ever dreamed, the launch of each new major web-services API is significant. When a rich and unique data repository like the World Bank's opens its data for free, a world of possibilities opens up.
