Case Study: USA Football

Client Overview

USA Football, a non-profit organization, is the first national advocacy group representing all levels of amateur football. Its mission is to provide support for organizations involved in youth and high school football.

Challenge

Being a new organization, USA Football needed a fitting web communications program to showcase its mission and offerings, to faciliate membership and event registration, and to capture and communicate with its target audiences. A website launch by the kickoff of the 2003 football season was designated as the perfect time for USA Football (and its partner organizations) to announce its existence to the football community. In addition to content, the site needed to provide interactive tools and an area for individuals to register for site benefits such as e-newsletters, membership, and events.

Solution

In conjunction with our graphic design partner, HZDG, Phase2 implemented a quality web presence that professionally showcases the mission of their organization and provides tools and information to the many fans of the youth football.

As is our normal preference, we began our USA Football engagement with a phased deliverable/implementation strategy. Such a strategy works well to balance their short-term needs, long-term plans, and overall level of growth. At the end of each phase, we revisited the overall IT strategy, i.e., the technology roadmap, to determine if the path should stay the same or if adjustments need to be made.

Phase 1: From the inception of USA Football, Phase2 collaborated with USA Football to develop an overall IT strategy that complements the mission of their business. Workshops were held to jointly develop and prioritize project needs based on scope, schedule, and cost. A roadmap strategizing the evolution of their technical infrastructure was developed as well.

Phase 2: Phase2 implemented a quality web presence that professionally showcases the mission of their organization and provides tools and information to the many fans of the youth football. The site includes a host of informational articles, an all-encompassing Coach's Guide, and technical features such as the ability to email a site link to a friend, print-friendly pages, and an online newsletter signup area. Such an implementation allowed USA Football to gain an online presence and make a name for themselves in the football community.

Phase 3: In conjunction with their business directives of creating a membership program and putting on events, Phase2 conducted e-commerce analysis to determine the best method of enacting online purchase capabilities across the site. Upon discussing our analysis with the client, it was concluded that a custom-developed presence by Phase2 was the best option for them. Such a extension to the existing website included the ability to register for membership and/or events online through the website. In addition, USA Football has the ability to sell products over the web (i.e., books, apparel, etc.).

Value Proposition

Because of Phase2, USA Football now benefits from:
  • Extensible technical infrastructure that supports future business evolution such as site authentication, profile management, and AMS integration,
  • Branding and a primary marketing tool from which all other marketing programs can be based and/or linked,
  • Ability to easily capture and store site visitor and, more importantly, potential member information online,
  • Measurable ROI, in terms of online payment membership dues and event registrations.
