America's Game: The Super Bowl Champions is a new program on NFL Network counting down the top 20 Super Bowl-winning teams in NFL history. The website provides fans unlimited access to information about each championship team including statistics, biographies and videos as well as photo galleries, recap stories, and cover photos from Sports Illustrated. Each episode of America's Game is a 60-minute documentary taking NFL fans inside the locker rooms of each Super Bowl winner, featuring never-before-told, behind-the-scenes stories from the participants.

Challenge

Phase2 and the Hirshorn Zuckerman Design Group ("HZDG") were engaged by the NFL to develop a new website and content management system ("CMS") to complement the America's Game television program. The site needed to highly interactive and dynamic, yet easy to maintain by the NFL's always-busy, geographically-distributed staff.

Solution

Phase2 decided to implement a custom content management system ("CMS") that provides the NFL staff with a modular, web-based mechanism to maintain all features and functionality on the highly-interactive website. The CMS allows NFL staff to change all parts of the Flash-driven, dynamic design elements, which is functionality that most CMS systems do not allow.

NFL America's Game Website

Through this CMS, the following functionality is managed and maintained by NFL staff:

• Team Voting/Fan Ranking Mechanism: Fans are able to rank Superbowl-winning teams via the website. The system then recalculates the votes (real-time) based on a predefined weighting scheme and redisplays the adjusted rankings on the website.


• Integrated Multimedia Video Player: For ease of use and to keep site visitors from having to download any special software to view video files, Flash technology was used to integrate a video player.


• Integrated Photo Gallery: For the highest resolution possible, while keeping file size to a minimum (from the site visitor's perspective), Flash technology was used to integrate a photo gallery.


• Dynamically-Generate Program Episode Guide: Each time an episode is approaching or has run on television, the system automatically adjusts the website to reflect the next episode.


• Team and Roster Information: Special attention was paid to the display and handling of team and player data. This includes team stats, league standings, team rosters, and team schedules.


• Fan Comment Submission Feature: Site visitors can visit the site and submit comments for any of the teams.
